T1 Tyranny – Like Having Money to Burn

burningbuckT1 connections are expensive. There’s no way around that fact.

And maybe what the Telcos charge for a T1 line isn’t precisely, tyranny, but if you’re writing the check to pay for it each month it sure might seem that way.

But hey you have a choice.

That Choice Has Two Parts

Before we look at the two parts that can replace your T1 or frame relay service and save you a bundle of money lets first look at why T1 or frame relay services are typically put into use.

Back in the day, as the saying goes, there was a time when T1 service was the sexiest kid on the block with the fastest connection around, right?

Telcos had that alone and if you wanted the speed (bandwidth) you paid the freight (the monthly service charge for the T1).

And that freight bill wasn’t cheap.

But you had the speed. Besides having a “T” was cool. Bragging points when you and your business buddies got together.

The other reason for a T1 or frame relay setup was to connect securely to a remote location. But …

Times Have Been a’Changin’

Starting back around 2002 cable company Internet service connections were already getting faster than a T1 and where cheaper. Cable internet service is now many multiples faster than T1 lines and costs about 1/4 the price. That’s a lot of savings, for a lot more speed.

For those that need a dedicated, secure connection from one location to another the solution is as easy as ….

Site to Site VPN

Skipping all the tech talk this is just a way to connect between two remote locations using your standard Internet connection and a bit of magic performed by the hardware (router usually) connecting you to the Internet. In sum the hardware just scrambles all the data leaving your side of the connection in a way that no one else can unscramble it. No one except for the hardware (the router) at your other location.

It’s that simple. And a lot less money.
